SWIM, BIKE AND RUN AT THE YMCA OF CENTRAL KENTUCKY’S 15TH ANNUAL KIDS TRIATHLON

C.M. Gatton Beaumont YMCA to host event on Sunday morning, August 25th

For many children, summer means technology overload – smartphones, tablets and streaming services – it no longer means running outside with friends, swimming with family, or riding bikes with the wind behind them. Today, the hot months are mostly sedentary, with children glued to a device.

In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), children spend more than seven and a half hours per day on screens, including smart phones, computers, televisions and video games. HHS also reports that only one in three children are physically active each day.

The YMCA of Central Kentucky is offering an antidote, it’s Annual Kids Triathlon.

The Y launched the event 15 years ago “as a way to get our kids active and involved in a growing sport,” said David Martorano, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of Central Kentucky. “The Kids Tri fits so well with the Y’s areas of focus for youth development and healthy living.

“It inspires and builds self-esteem, teamwork skills, discipline, sportsmanship, and healthy ambition,” Martorano added. “This is an event that requires kids to be independent and give their best effort.”

This year’s event is for ages 6-14, and begins at 7:30 a.m. The age groups and distances for each are as follows:
