Courtney Hunn is a friendly, familiar face at the North Lexington YMCA. These days, you might see her in the wellness center keeping the facilities clean and welcoming guests or teaching one of her four weekly group exercise classes. You might even catch her breaking a sweat doing her own workouts. But no matter where or when you see her, you can always count on her for a sincere greeting, a smile, and positive energy.
A YMCA staff member since 2007, Courtney has held many roles. "When I started, I was a summer camp counselor; I did that for six years. It was a fun job, and I worked with some great people, but kids will wear you out!" It was then she transitioned to a different area of working with children, in Kids Corner, before making a change to group fitness and wellness.
Though she is an avid sports fan and was told she would be a natural working in the fitness area, Courtney says the Y definitely pushed her out of her comfort zone. Not one to shy away from the challenge, she surrounded herself with people from whom she could learn, and started attending a variety of classes to explore different instructors' styles. We'd say Courtney found her own groove, as she has grown her own classes with regular participants attending and teaching a variety of formats: interval training, step aerobics, and kickboxing!
Courtney continues to be excited about the work of the YMCA as she says she can see the positive impact the Y has on people. She also loves the diversity of the community and how she has made connections with people of all ages and stages.
Courtney was the recipient of the 2021 Rob Taylor Spirit Award, which recognizes part-time staff for their important contributions to the Y. She was honored for her willingness to go the extra mile, her commitment to the North Y community, and her deep love of the Y. We're proud of all the ways Courtney has grown as a person, and we're thankful for all the ways she has made our YMCA better.
